There are lots of things that people like to tell you about having kids.  From the sleepless nights to how much they cost.  It is all true, but there’s more to it than that.

They are able to bring out a full spectrum of emotions in you.  Sometimes within the space of 30 seconds.  You can love them more than anything else in the world, but simultaneously want them to go far away for a bit.

But there are a few other things that they do to that no one tells you about.  So I thought I’d give you a heads up.

They do weird stuff

Sometimes your kids will do stuff that just leaves you staring at them opened mouthed.  Other times you will find yourself saying “why did you think it was a good idea to lick that?”

They lick, touch and eat everything they shouldn’t.  If it looks extra disgusting this will increase the likelihood of your kids doing something with it that they shouldn’t.

They’ll make you laugh so much it hurts

Even very small children know when they are being funny.  They will do stuff just to make you laugh and it is adorable.

Sometimes they are pure comic genius.  They’ll stumble on comedy gold and you’ll laugh so hard that you cry.

On top of this, they sometimes do stuff accidentally and you know you shouldn’t laugh but it takes everything you can to hold in the laughter.  That hurts too.

You’ll miss them even when they are right next to you

This particularly happens when they are sleeping.  They can drive you wild all day and then as soon as they fall asleep you miss them.

It is stupid and weird but it happens.  Sometimes you can be cuddling them and watching TV and you still miss them.  Even though you know that they are that person that you have your arm around.

They destroy all your stuff

Well maybe not all of it, but it is good to not harbour too much attachment to your belongings if you have kids on the way.

Even the best hidden and most precious of things, they seem to have a way of finding them and ruining them in a way that means you can never enjoy them again.  My advice is to stop having nice stuff for a while.

They change the way you look at the world

You might feel like you are comfortable with your moral compass and your life goals, but when you have kids you start looking at it all over again.

Suddenly the most important person in the world isn’t you.  It is this tiny little human that walks around and chats back to you.  It feels scary at first but slowly you start to shape your world to make it better for them.

What do your kids do that you weren’t expecting?

Are there any parts of parenthood that you weren’t expecting?  Let me know in the comments and I’ll add them to the list.
